Berlin by wheelchair: surprisingly free when you plan it well.

Berlin is large, lively and not perfect on every corner. Yet wheelchair users can often navigate it remarkably well: dense public transport, many level attractions, accessible culture, spacious parks and useful assistance services. These are the details that genuinely matter once you arrive.

How to get around Berlin with confidence

The network is dense and the main sights are well connected. What matters most is a route with working lifts, enough battery range and equipment suited to your day.

Buses are often easiest

BVG buses are accessible and provide wheelchair spaces and ramps. Routes 100, 200 and 300 connect many famous sights and work well for an informal city tour.

Underground and S-Bahn

Underground and S-Bahn trains cover the city efficiently. Accessible vehicles do not mean every station is step-free. Check your departure, interchange and destination stations, working lifts and any boarding assistance. Speak to the driver before boarding when help is needed.

Trams and ferries

BVG trams have ramps and many stops offer a low-step entrance, but some stops remain restricted. Motorised BVG ferries are accessible. Check the landing stage and timetable before travelling.

Free travel assistance

VBB’s bus and rail accompaniment runs daily from 7 am to 10 pm within Berlin and to BER. Assistance is free, but a valid ticket is still required. Book by the previous day on +49 30 34649940. A journey to BER requires a ticket including fare zone C.

A calmer BER journey

The free Mobility Service assists from check-in through security to boarding and on arrival. Ideally register your needs with the airline or tour operator at least 48 hours beforehand.

Accessible toilets

Include toilet stops in your route. Berlin’s official information lists public facilities, and the Berliner Toilette app helps on the move. Check wheelchair access and current operation. Eligible Euro-key users can use their key at suitable facilities.

Accessible highlights

Brandenburg Gate, the government quarter, East Side Gallery, Berlin Wall Memorial, Museum Island and many Spree riverside areas are easy to reach. Book the Reichstag, tours and wheelchair seating early.

Restaurants and hotels

Do not rely on the word “accessible” alone. Ask for door widths, roll-in shower, bed access, lift size and an accessible toilet. “Tourism for All” inspection reports provide useful detail.

Choose the right aid

A compact power chair can help in museums and restaurants; a scooter may suit longer outdoor trips. Range, dimensions and permission on public transport depend on the model. We discuss your equipment and itinerary personally.

A broken lift? VBB-BAV can help

Call +49 30 25414444. Staff check an accessible alternative route; if none is suitable, the service can arrange an appropriate taxi to an accessible station. It replaces the section made impossible by a missing or faulty lift. See VBB for the conditions.

Keep your travel plan handy

Open BVG’s journey planner and choose the accessibility settings you need. Save the rail map and a bus alternative. Recheck works and lifts on the day. For a scooter, also confirm permitted dimensions, weight and carriage conditions beforehand.
